I must disagree. I personally don’t feel that walking through the Muslim Quarter is a sign of insecurity, in fact I think we should walk through the “Muslim” (really just another Jewish quarter) everyday but unfortunately our government has not shown total ownership of our land and therefore it is dangerous. On the Jerusalem Day our government does show ownership over all quarters and allow Jews to feel safe.
I have no need to prove myself to the Muslims or taunt them but rather remind myself that this land is ours.
I don’t think walking through the Muslim quarter is meant to taunt. In addition, we as westerners don’t necessarily understand the culture of the Middle East. Many Jews from Arab Countries have told me that Arabs around the world were born and raised knowing that showing ownership and lack of fear is the key to success in the Middle East and maybe to win respect in our neighbors eyes we have to be proud of ourselves and show that we have no fear but rather know in our hearts that this land is ours.
It is a culture thing and until we, who now live in the Middle east the local culture we will never fully feel at home
Avi, thanks for your thoughtful comment. I do agree that the most important this is for US to know that this is our land. I guess it boils down to what your focus and intention is. If you are walking through there to remind yourself that all of Eretz Yisrael belongs to us, then it makes sense. If your purpose is to taunt, then I feel that shows insecurity.
Can I simply say what a comfort to find someone who actually understands what they are discussing on the net. You definitely understand how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people should check this out and understand this side of the story. I was surprised that you are not more popular since you most certainly have the gift.
